Woman in critical condition after car hits deer

DELAWARE CITY, DELAWARE (11/8/2015) A woman was critically injured this evening when a car collided with a deer on Route 9 near Delaware City, according to Delaware State Police.

The crash happened about 8:45 p.m. in the southbound lane north of Route 72, near the Delaware City Refinery.

The antlered deer went through the windshield and injured the woman who was a passenger in the front seat of a southbound 1992 Toyota Corolla.

She was identified as Jamie M. Episcopo, 48, of Delaware City. She was treated by paramedics and taken to Christiana Hospital.

The driver, Gary A. Episcopo, 53, of Delaware City, was not injured. After the collision, he attempted to drive the car to the Delaware City Fire Company but stopped at Fifth and Madison streets in Delaware City.

Delaware City and Delaware State Police were on the scene.

Route 9 was closed from Route 72 to the Delaware City firehouse.
