DOVER, DELAWARE (10/13/2015) A 63-year-old man died Monday when the bicycle he was riding was struck by an SUV, Dover police said today.
The accident happened just before 6 p.m. on Hazletville Road east of Wyoming Mill Road.
Bernard Etapale was westbound in the bicycle lane but entered the travel lane while approaching Wyoming Mill Road and was struck by a westbound Jeep Compass, Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said.
Etapale fell off the bicycle and struck the windshield of the Jeep, Hoffman said.
Bystanders and arriving offiers rendered first aid and CPR before Etapale was taken by ambulance to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital.
He was flown to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, and later was pronounced dead as a result of head trauma, Hoffman said.
Etapale was not wearing a helmt at the time of the crash.
Dover police are investigating the crash.
