LEWES, DELAWARE (10/5/2015) A 26-year-old man was charged with DUI and other counts after hitting an SUV, causing it to overturn, then fleeing and crashing into the rear of a Lewes police vehicle that was trying to help stop him, Delaware State Police said.
The first crash happened about 6:50 p.m. Sunday as Samuel E. Pu Tzoy, driving a 2002 Toyota Celica, was westbound on Clay Road approaching a stop sign at Westcoats Corner Road.
State police said Pu Tzoy failed to stop and struck the passenger side of a 2001 Jeep Cherokee driven by Bradford S. Morris, 62, of Lewes, causing the Jeep to overturn several times.
Pu Tzoy initially stopped on the shoulder, police said, but then pulled away and headed east into Lewes on Savannah Road (U.S. 9), where he struck the rear of the Lewes Police Department vehicle.
Morris and his 56-year-old wife, Guadalupe, were both taken by ambulance to Beebe HealthCare’s hospital in Lewes. She was admitted with serious injuries, police said, and later transferred to Christiana Hospital in Stanton. He was treated at Beebe for injuries police said were not life-threatening. Both were wearing seat belts, police said.
Pu Tzoy was charged by troopers with vehicular assault, leaving the scene of a collision resulting in injury, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving without a valid license and other traffic counts.
Lewes police charged Pu Tzoy with driving under the influence of alcohol, disregarding a police officer’s signal, reckless driving and other traffic offenses.
He was being held at Sussex Correctional Institution near Georgetown in lieu of $7,201 cash bond.
