SMYRNA, DELAWARE (9/29/2015) An 18-year-old man was killed this morning when his car struck a tree and caught fire near Smyrna, according to Delaware State Police.
The crash happened about 7:20 a.m. on Hillyard Road just west of Brenford Road.
Police said Justin N. Fields, of Clayton, was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry westbound when he failed to negotiate a right curve and traveled off the south side of the road, striking a tree head-on.
Two passersby stopped and pulled Fields out before the car became engulfed in flames.
Fields, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead while being taken by ambulance to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover.
Police are still investigating but said speed and alcohol are not contributing factors.
Hillyard Road was closed about 3 hours.
