2 hurt in Route 273 crash near Route 1; truck overturns

DSP logoNEW CASTLE, DELAWARE (7/9/2015) Delaware State Police say two people were injured this afternoon when two vehicles collided on Route 273 west of New Castle, overturning a box truck and trapping one driver for 25 minutes.

The accident was reported at 3:36 p.m. just east of Route 1.

William Edwards, 76, of Newark, was driving a 2000 Mercedes Benz eastbound when the car struck a sign in the median for unknown reason, then crossed into the westbound lanes and struck the driver’s side of a 2014 Isuzu truck that overturned onto its right side in the roadway, police said.

The Mercedes spun around  and came to rest in a ditch, trapping Edwards until he was extricated by firefighters.

He and an 11-year-old girl who was a passenger were both taken to Christiana Hospital for injuries police said were not life-threatening.

The driver of the truck, William Knight, 24, of Hanover, Pennsylvania, declined treatment at the scene.

Route 273 was closed about 2.5 hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
