Newark burglars flee after finding resident home

NEWARK, DELAWARE (6/24/2015) Two burglars fled a home in the 100 block of E. Park Place this morning after discovering a resident was home, Newark police said.

The 22-year-old victim was awakened about 4:30 a.m. by the sound of strangers in his home, Lt. Bill Hargrove said.

One of the intruders seemed very startled when they opened the bedroom door and discovered the resident, Hargrove said.

The pair fled and the victim tried to call 911 on his cellphone but couldn’t get a signal for 15 minutes.

He then walked to the University of Delaware Police Department on Academy Street, and UD and Newark officers with a K-9 searched but could not locate the suspects.

Investigators found the burglars had entered through an unlocked basement window, then gathered items to steal and put them near a door. Police and the residents are still trying to determine if anything was taken from the home.

The intruder who opened the bedroom door was described as a black male about 6-feet-2. The victim was unable to describe the second intruder.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Morgan Fountain at 302-366-7100, ext. 3133 or Morgan.Fountain@cj.state.de.us.
