NEWARK, DELAWARE (4/19/2015) The Ride to the Tide to benefit Special Olympics Delaware is underway today.
The police-escorted ride began about 10:30 a.m. at the University of Delaware athletic complex in Newark and, after traveling south on Route 896 and Route 9, was due to stop at the Blue Hen Corporate Center on Bay Road in Dover to add more rider. From there. the ride is traveling south on Bay Road and then south on Route 1.
The ride was expected to end about 1 p.m. at Jake’s Seafood House on Route 1 near Rehoboth Beach, where lunch is provided for the riders courtesy of the restaurant.
Police are giving the ride priority so no stops are made at traffic lights.
The ninth annual ride is sponsored by Delmarva Power and organized by the Delaware Blue Knights – Chapter 1. The event is supported by Delaware law enforcement for Special Olympics Delaware, Jake’s Seafood House, WBOC 16 and Fox 21 Delmarva.
A record 653 bikers and 253 passengers raised $32,500 in 2014. The event has raised more than $140,500.
Riders leaving from Newark will travel about 80 miles, staying on Route 1 directly to Jake’s.
Those starting in Dover will travel about 40 miles, taking this route:
‐ Exit Blue Hen Corporate Center onto South Bay Rd (Rt 13) to Rt 1
‐ Rt 1 South to Five Points (Lewes) turning right onto Rt 9
‐ Rt 9 to first light and turn left onto Beaver Dam Rd (CR 285) and
immediate left onto Plantation Rd (CR 275)
‐ Plantation Rd south to Old Landing Rd (CR 274) turning left
‐ Old Landing Rd to Rt 1, turning right
‐ Rt 1 (Bus Lane) to Jake’s Seafood
