OAK ORCHARD, DELAWARE (4/10/2015) One person died when fire swept through an apartment building in Oak Orchard early today, authorities said.
The blaze at 28420 Delaware Ave. was reported just after 3 a.m. It was one of two fatal fires in the state today.
Volunteers from Indian River Fire Company found a heavy volume of fire when they arrived, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.
The person killed was found inside one of the six apartments, Chionchio said. No other injuries were reported.
The victim’s identity has not been released pending an autopsy, Chionchio said.
Millsboro, Lewes and Dagsboro fire companies also were on the scene, as well as Sussex County paramedics.
Fire marshal deputies are still trying to determine how the fire started, Chionchio said.
Damage was estimated at $100,000.
The American Red Cross is assisting about six displaced tenants.
