Light out on car brings drug arrest near Lewes

DSP logoLEWES, DELAWARE (3/28/2015) A 21-year-old man was arrested early today on drug charges after a state trooper stopped his car for not having his license plate light working, police said.

The incident happened about 1:30 a.m. on Route 24 (John J. Williams Highway) just west of Mulberry Knoll Road, south of Lewes.

The trooper stopped a silver Honda Accord and smelled marijuana when he approached the car, police said.

A search of the driver, Nicholas T. Exler, of Lewes, found a large bundle in his pants pocket with 130 baggies of heroin stamped with the words “Fire” or “Fat Boy,” police said, as well as marijuana and cocaine inside a small bag in the rear of his pants and $275 in suspected drug proceeds.

A black BB gun resembling a Glock semi-automatic handgun was found under the front passenger seat of the car, police said.

Exler was charged with possession with the intent to feliver cocaine, possession with the intent to deliver cocaine, two counts of possession of a controlled substance in a Tier 1 quantity, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving with an expired license and failure to have a license plate light. He was being held at Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $14,300 secured bail.
