WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (3/11/2015) Multiple agencies are involved in the cleanup of about 100 gallons of oil that spilled from a foreign freighter into the Delaware River near Wilmington, the Coast Guard said Tuesday.
The spill caused a quarter-mile sheen on the river stretching to Pennsville, New Jersey.
The spill was reported about 1:30 p.m. Monday, the Coast Guard said.
In addition to Coast Guard pollution experts and a helicopter from Atlantic City, crews from the Delaware and New Jersey state environmental agencies responded.
The Coast Guard said initial reports indicated about 400 to 500 gallons of oil spilled onto the freighter’s deck and about 100 gallons into the river. The amount and source are under investigation.
