NEWARK, DELAWARE (1/29/2015) A 30-year-old man was charged with a third DUI after a hit-and-run crash in Newark and three earlier hit-and-runs in Maryland, Newark police said.

Eric M. Zimmer. of Elkton, Maryland, was arrested about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday after a Newark officer stopped his pickup truck that was speeding north on South Main Street with no headlights and with sparks flying from the front right tire, police said.

Cpl. James N. Spadola, a police spokesman, said Zimmer showed obvious signs of alcohol impairment.

After Zimmer refused an officer’s orders he was placed under arrest after a brief struggle, Spadola said, and then taken to Christiana Hospital for treatment of facial injuries from the struggle.

Officers then determined Zimmer had been involved in a hit-run accident at Interchange Boulevard and Elkton Road in Newark and three others in Maryland before he was stopped, Spadola said. There were no injuries in the Newark crash but the vehicle had to be towed.

After Zimmer was released from the hospital Thursday, he was charged with felony third DUI. He had previous convictions in 2009 and 2012, Spadola said. He also was charged with resisting arrest and 13 traffic offenses.

Zimmer, of the 500 block of Booth St., was being held in Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington in lieu of $3,950 secured bond and $2,300 unsecured bond.
