7-Eleven clerk beaten by shoplifting youths, police say

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (1/19/2015) A 7-Eleven clerk was assaulted by five juveniles after he caught them shoplifting and they ransacked the store, city police said. Three of the youths were later arrested.

The incident happened just before midnight Sunday at 1801 Pennsylvania Ave.

When the clerk confronted the youths who were shoplifting, they started ransacking the store and then ran out, police said.

The clerk followed and the five youths turned and struck him numerous times about his body, then fled on foot. The clerk suffered cuts on his face and elsewhere on his head as well as numerous bruises  on his face, arms and legs. He was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital for treatment.

As officers arrived, they located three youths who had proceeds from the 7-Eleven on them, police said. They were arrested and charged with robbery and conspiracy.

Two of them were 14 years old and turned over to their parents after posting $4,000 secured bail. The other, a 16-year-old, was being held in the New Castle County Detention Center in lieu of $5,000 secured bail.
