UPDATED STORY: Up to 4 inches of snow predicted for Delaware

NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE (1/18/2015) Icy roads are causing problems for drivers across northern Delaware this morning, with numerous crashes reported.

The National Weather Service extended a freezing rain advisory for New Castle County and southeastern Pennsylvania until noon.

Delmarva Power reported more than 3,400 customers lost service in the county, with most of those in the area from Odessa to the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal.

As temperatures climbed, the freezing rain turned to just heavy rain in many areas and flooding was reported in the 1,000 block of S. Market St. along Wilmington’s southern border.

One crash involved a state police cruiser already stopped for a crash on southbound I-495 above Naamans Road. The southbound lanes were closed at 8:55 a.m. at the state line, with traffic having to stay on I-95, but all lanes were later reopened.

Farther south on I-495, a van overturned in the southbound lanes, going over a guardrail in the median, near Cauffiel Parkway in the Holly Oak area. Injuries were reported.

DelDOT reported another crash closing the right southbound lane of I-495 at 12th Street.

A traffic cam at Bellevue Road showed northbound I-495 traffic jammed.

About 9:15 a.m., a car was reported into a guardrail on northbound I-95 just south of Darley Road.

DelDOT lowered the speed limit on I-495 to 45 mph.

State police urged anyone venturing out to use caution and said DelDOT was salting roadways.

Another crash on Summit Bridge closed lanes for a time but they were reopened just before 9 a.m.
