CLAYMONT, DELAWARE (1/12/2015) A 69-year-old man killed while crossing Naamans Road near Claymont before dawn this morning was struck by two vehicles, state police say. Only the second vehicle remained at the scene and police are still looking for the first.
The victim’s name has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The fatal accident happened about 6:25 a.m. at Society Drive, said Cpl. Jeffrey Hale. A wintry mix of precipitation had made many roads icy across New Castle County.
Hale said the victim was attempting to cross the westbound lanes in a marked crosswalk but against the traffic signal.
He was first struck by an unknown westbound vehicle that knocked him to the ground, where he was then struck by a westbound 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup driven by Jeffrey W. Hoerner, 56, of Wilmington.
Hoerner stopped at the scene but the first vehicle fled, Hale said.
Sgt. Michael McColley of New Castle County paramedics said the victim was in cardiac arrest at the scene and rushed to Christiana Hospital.
Traffic in the area on Naamans Road was restricted to one lane westbound for more than two hours while police investigated.
Hale asked anyone with information to call Sgt. Philip Dzielak at 302-365-8483.
