Weather delaying flights at PHL

NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE (1/12/2015) Travelers are facing weather delays averaging 2 hours on some flights arriving at Philadelphia International Airport this evening, officials say, the latest chapter in a stormy day across Delaware and the region.

Low ceilings are causing the delays at PHL, and outbound flights to certain East Coast airports with similar weather also face delays, according to the FAA website.

As the temperature rose above freezing this morning, the precipitation turned to just rain, which is expected to continue until late tonight.  Weather forecasters say no further precipitation is in the forecast for the next several days.

Odessa firefighters were called out at 7:52 a.m. for a report of wires down on southbound Route 1 at Pole Bridge Road.

Delmarva Power reported more than 3,200 customers lost service in that area at 7:25 a.m. Power was out more than an hour before it was restored.

The weather made for a messy morning commute for motorists as well, with police reported dealing with numerous other accidents.

A pedestrian was fatally injured before dawn on Naamans Road at Society Drive near Claymont, and state police are still looking for one of two vehicles that struck the 69-year-old man.

All public New Castle County school districts delayed opening in the face of predicted freezing rain during the morning commute. Many private and charter schools also delayed the start of classes.

New Castle County government announced offices would open at normal times.
