Broomstick used in sports bar robbery try

BROOKSIDE, DELAWARE (12/28/2014) A customer used a broomstick to assault a sports bar employee but fled empty handed after scuffling with the employee and another customer, state police said Saturday.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. Friday at Chestnut Hill Sports Bar, 15 Prestbury Square, off East Chestnut Hill Road (Route 4).

Police said a customer who had left earlier returned to the business and went into the men’s bathroom, coming out a few minutes later armed with a broom handle. He used it to strike a 64-year-old woman who was cleaning the business and demanded money from the register, implying he had a gun.

As the two were scuffling, police said, another customer — a 47-year-old man — arrived. The robber attempted to flee but the other patron tried to stop him and the two fought, but the robber eventually escaped and ran west from the bar.

The 47-year-old man suffered minor injuries but did not require immediate medical attention, police said. The woman was not injured.

The robber was described as 30-35 years old, 5-feet-5 to 5-feet-9, balding and wearing blue jeans and a green T-shirt.

Police asked anyone with information to callĀ at 302-834-2630.
