NEW CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE (12/25/2014) A 68-year-old man was in serious condition after a house fire early today in the Harmony Woods neighborhood east of Newark, authorities said.
The fire broke out about 12:30 a.m. in the first block of Octave Court.
Flames were engulfing the home when firefighters arrived, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.
He said the injured resident, suffering from smoke inhalation, was taken by ambulance to nearby Christiana Hospital, then transferred to Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pennsylvania.
Investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started.
Damage was estimated at $75,000.
