Nor’easter dumps 2 inches of rain along coast; roads flood

DELAWARE (12/9/2014) A nor’easter pounded the Delaware coast overnight, with more than 2 inches of rain recorded by 6:30 a.m. at Bethany Beach and Long Neck. Flooding was reported on several roads in Sussex County.

Winds were gusting to 34 mph at the inlet and Rehoboth Beach, blowing sand across State Route 1 near the inlet, and DelDOT advises motorists to use caution in the area. Water also covered lanes on Route 1 at times.

More rain is in the forecast, with a half to three-quarters of an inch predicted for Sussex County.

In northern Delaware, a flood watch originally in effect until early Wednesday was lifted in early afternoon as the threat eased. About a quarter inch of rain was measured by 6:45 a.m. About a half inch fell in Kent County. And 3.46 inches was measured at Chadds Ford in Pennsylvania, according to the National Weather Service.

Up to another quarter inch of rain is predicted for New Castle County tonight,. More light rain is forecast through Wednesday, with a chance of snow showers early Thursday.  But snow and ice may cause travel problems in areas of eastern Pennsylvania north of Philadelphia, forecasters warn. As much as a foot of snow may fall at higher elevations in the Pocono Mountains.

A coastal flood warning was in effect for Kent and Sussex counties ended at 1 p.m.  At 8:20 a.m., water was covering Prime Hook Road in Sussex but it remained passable, DelDOT reported. In Oak Orchard, part of River Road was closed by flooding. And in New Castle County, Silver Run Road east of Odessa was closed by flooding in early afternoon.
