Body recovered near capsized barge at Port of Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (12/3/2014) A body was recovered today from the area at the Port of Wilmington where a dredging barge capsized Tuesday night.

Wilmington Fire Chief Anthony Goode announced the news via Twitter, adding: “Agencies will begin the process of identification.”

“I  would like to thank all those involved with the search & recovery efforts at the Norfolk Dredging incident,” Goode said.

“My sincere condolences go out the family, friends & co-workers of the deceased. You all have & will remain in my thoughts & prayers.”

Goode said, “Search & Recovery efforts were conducted in an unstable, hazardous environment by crews determined to find & recover the missing worker.”

The accident was reported just before 7 p.m., drawing Wilmington firefighters as well as the New Castle County and state police marine and dive teams and the Coast Guard to the scene, Goode said.

After searching for several hours Tuesday night, the divers left the water but surface crews continued looking for the missing person through the night.
