67-year-old man dies in Newark house fire

NEWARK, DELAWARE (12/15/2014) A 67-year-old man died and a woman was injured this morning when fire swept through a home in the Elan Of Huntington Hills neighborhood in Newark. Three other occupants escaped without injury.

The home in the first block of S. Fawn Drive was fully involved in flames when firefighters from Aetna Hose Hook & Ladder Company arrived shortly after 5 a.m.

A 66-year-old woman, suffering from smoke inhalation, was treated by paramedics and taken by ambulance to  Christiana Hospital, said Cpl. Abigail Haas of New Castle County Emergency Medical Services.

She said a 15-year-old boy, a 45-year-old woman and a 46-year-old woman safely escaped from the burning home before emergency crews arrived.

Haas said the body of the man was found inside the home by firefighters. He was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics.

Christiana, Elsmere, Five Points, Mill Creek, Cranston Heights and Minquas fire companies also responded, as well as Newark police.

The Newark and state fire marshals were investigating the blaze.
