72-year-old struck in robbery try near Wilmington

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (12/14/2014) A 72-year-old Wilmington man was struck several times with a blunt object when a man tried to rob him after he left a bank southwest of the city, state police said.

The incident happened about 1 p.m. Saturday after the victim had left the Citizens Bank branch at 1 Germay Drive, off Maryland Avenue.

The victim was approached from behind and after the robber struck him, he attempted to take the elderly man’s wallet from his pocket. But he fled empty-handed after a passerby approached, heading west on Maryland Avenue (Route 4).

The passerby drove the victim home, and an ambulance then took him to St. Francis Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries, police said.

The robber was described as 6-feet to 6-feet-2 and with brown hair.
