SMYRNA, DELAWARE (4/19/2015) Three people were injured, one of them seriously, when a driver lost control of his SUV, which rolled over numerous times this morning near the North Smyrna exit of Route 1, state police said.

The accident happened about 7:25 a.m. and closed the northbound lanes for nearly an hour.

Police said 17-year-old Dean A. Herrick, of Wilmington, was driving a 2002 Jeep Cherokee at apparent high speed when it entered the grass median. Herrick attempted to re-enter the roadway but lost control and the Jeep overturned, police said.

An 18-year-old woman from Middletown, who was a passenger in the front seat, was ejected from the SUV. Police said she wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

The woman was taken to Christiana Hospital by Delaware State Police helicopter and admitted with serious injuries.

Herrick and a 17-year-old passenger from Wilmington, who were both wearing seat belts, were taken by ambulance to Christiana for treatment of injuries not life-threatening, police said.
