BEAR, DELAWARE (4/4/2015) A suspicious item forced the evacuation of the New Castle County Bear Library this afternoon and closure of nearby roads, but the device was later determined to be harmless, county police said.
The incident began about 12:30 p.m. when a passerby alerted a library staff member to what appeared to be a timer on a bike leaning against a pole near the library at U.S. 40 and Route 7.
Police, along with fire police and DelDOT crews, closed nearby roads while county explosives experts used a robot to examine the item, which was determined to be a device used to measure distance covered on the bicycle. The owner was located but no charges were filed, Officer First Class Tom Jackson said.
No other suspicious devices were located and the library and roads were reopened.
