CHESWOLD, DELAWARE (1/3/2015) A 26-year-old man died west of Cheswold on Friday when his car struck a tree and a telephone pole, state police said.
The accident happened about 12:10 a.m. on Brenford Road (Route 42) north of Mount Friendship Road.
Luis M. Burgos-Osorio was driving south in a 2007 Pontiac G6 at apparent high speed, police said.
As the car entered a slight left curve, he drove into the northbound lane, overcorrected and crossed the southbound lane and struck the tree with the driver’s side door.
The car then spun around and struck the pole with the rear of the vehicle before stopping in the center of the road.
Burgos-Osorio was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said he was wearing a seat belt.
Troopers are still investigating but say speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash.
Brenford Road was closed in the area about three hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
