SMYRNA, DELAWARE (12/29/2014) Smyrna police charged a 28-year-old man in connection with a robbery early Monday at a Valero gas station after he was arrested later in the day in a domestic incident, police said.
The suspect also had been in the police station for an unrelated incident on Sunday — wearing the same clothing as worn during the Valero robbery — and had been released, police said.
The Valero robbery happened about 12:45 a.m. at 313 N. DuPont Blvd. (U.S. 13). A jacket and hooded sweatshirt worn by the robber were found by police discarded outside the store.
Police released a surveillance image and a description of the robber to the media about three hours later.
Within hours, investigators were informed the man shown in the Valero robbery matched the description of a man arrested and released about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. They were examining surveillance video of him leaving the police station — showing a man in the same clothing as in the Valero robbery — when word came he was in custody again
“When investigators contacted the suspect and conducted an interview the suspect again was wearing the same clothing as in the robbery, minus the jacket and sweatshirt which was recovered as evidence,” Cpl. Brandon Dunning said.
Jonathan C. Gregg, of the 300 block of W. Mt. Vernon St. in Smyrna, was charged with robbery and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony. He was being held at Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna in lieu of $10,500 secured bond.
