Marydel man charged in attempted car break-ins

SMYRNA, DELAWARE (12/28/2014)  A Marydel man was arrested early Sunday as he was attempting to break into cars parked at a Wawa store, Smyrna police said.

The incident was reported at 12:04 a.m. at the store at 500 Jimmy Drive, off South DuPont Blvd. (U.S. 13).

Police said John Walstrum, 22, of the 1000 block of Strauss Ave., was taken into custody after a brief struggle.

Two victims who spotted Walstrum trying to break into their unoccupied cars had contacted police, Cpl. Brandon Dunning said.

Officers found marijuana, a prescription pill bottle that didn’t belong to Walstrum and 17 prescription pills of seven varieties on Walstrum, Dunning said.

Walstrum was charged with two counts of attempted burglary, seven of possession of a controlled substance, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released on $8,500 unsecured bond.
