Car hits tree, infant seriously injured

GEORGETOWN, DELAWARE (10/11/2015) A 3-month-old boy was seriously injured when he was ejected from a car as it rolled over this morning in a crash southwest of Georgetown, the Delaware State Police said.

The accident was reported at 9:38 a.m. on Shiloh Church Road just east of Scott Land Road.

Police said Laura Cruz, 19, of Bridgeville, was driving a 2005 Nissan Sentra westbound when it drifted into the eastbound lane and upon overcorrecting, drove off the north side of the roadway were it struck a tree.

The Nissan continued then overturned and struck a fence before coming to a stop on its side.
Laura Cruz was not properly restrained but was not ejected, police said. She was taken by ambulance to Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford, where she was treated for injuries police said were not life-threatening.

Her 3-month-old son, who police said was seated in a car seat but not properly restrained, and the seat was not properly affixed to the car, was ejected. He was airlifted by Delaware State Police helicopter to A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital in Rockland , where he was admitted in stable condition.

 

Troopers are continuing their investigation and said charges are pending.
