MILLVILLE, DELAWARE (6/14/2016) A dump truck driver was cited with careless driving after the vehicle overturned, spilling a load of gravel, while attempting a turn west of Roxana on Monday, the Delaware State Police said.

The crash was reported at 4:26 p.m. at the intersection of Roxana Road (Route 17) and Atlantic Avenue (Route 26). Two other vehicles were involved but no one was injured.

Police said Adam J. Prettyman, 28, of Georgetown, was driving the dump truck loaded with dirt northbound on Roxana and entered the intersection attempting a right turn at unsafe speed as the traffic signal was changing from yellow to red.

The load shifted and the truck flipped onto its left side, with the top left of the dump bed landing on the front of a 2010 GMC contractor’s van that was stopped for the red light in the left turn lane of westbound Atlantic Avenue. The driver of the van was Dennis Marvel, 60, of Selbyville.

The dirt that spilled from the bed struck the driver’s door of a 2005 Dodge Dakota that also was stopped for the red light. The driver was Ryan G. Morgan, 40, of Dagsboro.

Delaware Department of Transportation crews removed the dirt and swept the roadway. The intersection was closed about two hours, with traffic detoured through a parking lot.
