SMYRNA, DELAWARE (6/14/2016) An 84-year-old woman was killed today when another driver fell asleep at the wheel of his SUV and drifted into her car, which was parked on the shoulder southwest of Smyrna, the Delaware State Police said.
The crash happened about 11:35 a.m. on Wheatleys Pond Road east of Bryn Zion Road.
The woman killed was identified as Doris M. Johnson of Hartly.
Police said Jose Tuma-Aid, 75, of Hartly, was driving a 2006 Toyota Highlander SUV westbound when he fell asleep and drifted off the north side of the road and struck the left rear of Johnson’s 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier. The car went into a small ditch and then came to rest on the roadway, and the SUV stopped in a small ditch.
Johnson was treated by Kent County paramedics, then taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital in Dover, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Tuma-Aid also was treated by paramedics and taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Police said both drivers were wearing seat belts.
Wheatleys Pond Road was closed about two hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
