BEAR, DELAWARE (6/12/2016) Two teenagers were seriously injured early today in a single-vehicle crash on Route 1 in Bear, the Delaware State Police said.

The crash happened about12:15 a.m. just south of Route 273 (Christiana Road).

Police said Matthew Mayer, 18, of Bear, was driving a 2002 Volkswagen Passat southbound and for unknown reason, the car drifted onto the left shoulder where it struck a guardrail. It then traveled across both southbound lanes and came to rest in the tree line.

Mayer and a 17-year-old Bear girl riding in the car were trapped in the wreckage until extricated by firefighters.

There were treated by New Castle County paramedics and then taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton.

Mayer was in cardiac arrest, paramedics spokesman Cpl. David J. McKinney Jr. said.

Both had been wearing seat belts, police said.

The right southbound lane was closed about 2.5 hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.
