GEORGETOWN, DELAWARE (2/6/2016) One driver was injured Friday in a crash between a car and tractor-trailer east of Georgetown, Delaware State Police said.

The accident happened about 1:45 p.m. at the intersection of Gravel Hill Road (Route 30) and Lewes Georgetown Highway (U.S. 9) and closed the roadways about 3 hours.

Police said John A. Culhane, 79, of Berlin, Maryland, was drivingĀ a 1998 Buick LeSabre southbound on Gravel Hill Road and turned left into the path of a northbound tractor-trailer driven by David A. Legg, 58 ,of Chestertown, Maryland.

Both vehicles had a green light, police said.

The truck struck a light and traffic pole on the northwest corner. The car was pushed backwards and came to a stop in the middle of the roadway. The engine compartment then caught fire, but it was extinguished by Georgetown Fire Company.

Culhane was taken by ambulance to Beebe Healthcare’s hospital in Lewes for injuries police said were not life-threatening.

He was cited by police for failure to yield the right of way and failure to have insurance in possession.

Legg was not injured.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts, police said.
