MILFORD, DELAWARE (12/17/2015) A 70-year-old woman was killed this afternoon when her car collided with a tractor-trailer on Route 15 west of Milford, Delaware State Police say.
The accident happened about 12:25 p.m. at the intersection of Canterbury Road (Route 15) and Rothermel Road.
Police said Julianna Melia, of Felton, was driving a 2004 Toyota Avalon westbound on Rothermel when she went through the stop sign and pulled out in front of the truck that was northbound on Canterbury Road while attempting a left turn.
The tractor-trailer struck the driver’s side of the car, pushing both through wet grass and stopping west of the roadway.
Melia was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, Jeffery P. Dawson, 49, of Townsend, was taken by ambulance to Milford Memorial Hospital, treated for injuries and released, police said.
Both drivers were wearing seat belts.
Traffic was detoured around the area for about 3 hours as police investigated the crash and the wreckage was removed.
Route 15 had been closed for weeks just north of the crash scene for a bridge project, but the road was reopened this morning, according to DelDOT, three days ahead of schedule.
