DOVER, DELAWARE (10/2/2015) A 22-year-old Dover man was charged with attempted murder after shooting his mother and her boyfriend during an argument, Delaware State Police said.

The incident happened about 1:50 p.m. Thursday in the first block of Washington Place in the Capitol Park neighborhood near Dover.

By the time troopers arrived, the two victims had been taken by private vehicle to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital.

Police released these details:

“A verbal argument ensued between Emory O. Cannon and his 41-year-old mother outside the residence which turned physical. The mother’s 31-year-old boyfriend quickly intervened by stepping between the two which then escalated into Cannon wrestling with him into a car that was parked in the driveway.

“Cannon then reached into the side of his pants and removed a handgun and began firing at the 31-year-old male striking him several times in the upper torso. During the gunfire, Cannon’s mother was also struck once in the right leg causing her to fall to the ground.

“The two were then driven to the hospital by a friend that was inside the house during the altercation and Cannon fled the area on foot.”

Police said Cannon was arrested within two hours at the parking lot of a Wawa convenience store at 1450 Forrest Ave.

He was charged with first-degree attempted murder, assault, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a person prohibited.

He was being held at Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna in lieu of $223,000 cash bond.

The boyfriend was admitted to the hospital in serious condition, police said.

The status of Cannon’s mother was not known, police said, but her wound was not considered life-threatening.

Police asked anyone with information to call Detective S. Doherty at 302-741-2817.
