Police find heroin, guns after Route 1 speeding stop

SMYRNA, DELAWARE (4/23/2015) A 31-year-old man was arrested after he was stopped for speeding on Route 1 and troopers found 6,900 bags of heroin in his minivan, Delaware State Police reported today.

The arrest happened about 11 p.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes of the highway near the south Smyrna exit.

While the trooper was speaking with the driver, Victor A. Mota Garcia of Philadelphia, a round of ammunition was spotted on the floor of the Honda Odyssey, police said.

A search of the vehicle found the heroin as well as more than $56,000 in suspected drug proceeds and two handguns in the spare tire compartment, police said.

Garcia had no driver’s license, police said, but provided a Dominican identification card.

Garcia was charged with possession of a firearm during commission of a felony; possessing a controlled substance in Tier 5 quantity; manufacturing, delivering or possessing with intent to manufacture, deliver or possess a controlled substance; possession of a weapon with a removed or altered serial number; possession of drug paraphernalia; driving without a license; and speeding.

He was being held in Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna in lieu of $171,002 cash bail.
