NEWARK, DELAWARE (4/12/2015) A woman’s blind date ended with the man stealing her purse and the victim biting him as she was dragged from her car, Newark police said this morning.
The incident began Saturday when the woman met Mutaz Albeladi for the date at his friend’s apartment in the 600 block of Lehigh Road.
As she was leaving about 9 a.m., Albeladi walked her to the parking lot, where they sat in the car for some time when he attempted to take the woman’s purse from the back seat, Lt. Bill Hargrove said.
A struggle ensued and she was dragged from the car while holding onto the purse strap, biting his arm before the strap broke and he escaped with the purse on foot, Hargrove said.
Albeladi, 24, of San Antonio, Texas, was arrested later when he returned to the apartment and charged with robbery. He was being held at Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington in lieu of $2,000 secured bond.
The purse was found in a dumpster in the parking lot nearby, Hargrove said.
He asked anyone with additional information on the incident to contact Officer Taras Gerasimov at 302-366-7100, ext. 3474 or Taras.Gerasimov@cj.state.de.us .
Hargrove said neither Albeladi nor the victim are associated with the University of Delaware.
