RISING SUN, DELAWARE (1/7/2015) Two Dover men were arrested on weapon charges and one of them on drug charges after state police said they stopped their SUV for speeding in Rising Sun early today.
The incident began about 1:05 a.m. when a trooper observed a silver Jeep Grand Cherokee eastbound on Walnut Shade Road near Whispering Lane.
The trooper, who was not identified, stopped the SUV in the parking lot of the Rising Sun Shore Stop on South State Street.
A computer check on the driver, Marques L. Hughes, 21, found his licenses was suspended.
A pat-down search of Hughes turned up 70 bags of heroin totaling 1.05 grams along with 0.015 grams of powdered cocaine, 1.2 grams of marijuana and two Adderall pills, police said.
After the trooper had the front seat passenger, Robert D. Jones Jr., 35, get out of the Jeep, a search found a loaded Colt .45 handgun with seven rounds of ammunition in the glove compartment, police said.
Hughes was charged with possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony, possession with intent to deliver heroin, possession of a controlled substance, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended and speeding. He was being held at Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna in lieu of $39,002 secured bond.
Jones was charged with possession of a firearm or ammunition by a person prohibited, possession of a firearm during commission of a felony and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. He was released on $28,000 unsecured bond.
