MILLTOWN, DELAWARE (12/13/2014) Fire caused heavy damage to a Kirkwood Gardens home early today, leaving 12 people homeless.
The blaze was reported by a passing motorist about 2 a.m. at 2401 Hammond Place.
Heavy flames were showing when Mill Creek firefighters arrived, and it took them 30 minutes to get the fire under control.
There were no injuries to the four adults and eight children who lived in the home, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal. He said the Red Cross is assisting the families.
Fire damage was estimated at $50,000.
He said investigators are still trying to determine how the fire started.
A smoke alarm inside the home did not sound due to a lack of maintenance, Chionchio said.
Cranston Heights, Belvedere, Minquas of Newport and Elsmere fire companies also responded as well as New Castle County police and emergency medical services.
The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the blaze.
