New farmers market opening in Wilmington today

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE (6/5/2015) A new farmers market is opening today in the Southbridge area in an effort to bring healthier food to residents, officials announced.

The market will be opening Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. through Sept. 25 at the Elbert-Palmer Elementary School playground, Claymont and A streets.

The grand opening today will feature fresh produce, locally prepared foods, crafts and local vendors as well as  cooking demonstrations, health screenings, face painting, singing and live music.

The Southbridge Farmers Market is a project of the South Wilmington Planning Network and was funded by a grant to Nemours Children’s Health System from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Partnership to Improve Community Health.

A formal ribbon cutting is planned at 4 p.m. with Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams, District Councilwoman Haniffa Shabazz, Southbridge Civic Association President Marie Reed and others participating.
