TOWNSEND, DELAWARE (4/17/2019) A 69-year-old Townsend woman was seriously injured in a three-vehicle crash on U.S. 13, the Delaware State Police said.

The collision happened about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday at the intersection with Blackbird Landing and Pine Tree roads, east of Townsend.

Police said the driver of a northbound 2014 Dodge Grand Caravan failed to stop at a red light and struck the left side of a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by the Townsend woman, that was making a left turn from Blackbird Landing Road.

The collision sent Malibu into a shallow retention pond. The van continued into the southbound lanes of U.S. 13 and struck the front of a 2007 Peterbilt tractor-trailer.

The Townsend woman was taken to Christiana Hospital.

The driver of the Dodge, a 37-year-old man from Augusta, Georgia, was taken to Christiana with injuries police described as not life-threatening. He was cited by troopers for disregarding a red light.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 60-year-old Chestertown, Maryland man, wasn’t injured.

Police said all drivers were wearing seat belts.

U.S. 13 was closed about three hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.

Police asked anyone with information on the crash to call Cpl. J. Breen at 302-365-8486.
