54-year-old Bear man dies after head-on Glasgow crash

GLASGOW, DELAWARE (8/6/2018) A 54-year-old man died after a head-on crash in Glasgow on Sunday night, the Delaware State Police said.

The collision happened about 11:45 p.m. at the intersection of Glasgow Avenue/Porter Road and Summit Bridge Road (Route 896).

The man killed was identified as Derek R. Turner of Bear.

Police said he was westbound on Porter Road, driving a 2005 Honda Civic, when he went through the intersection, drifted to the left and struck the front of a 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that was stopped in the left turn lane of Glasgow Avenue at a red light.

Turner was taken by ambulance to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, where he died. Police said alcohol use on his behalf was a contributing factor in the crash.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 26-year-old Newark man, was treated for injuries police described as not life-threatening.

Glasgow Avenue was closed about three hours as police investigated and the wreckage was cleared.

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate a fatal crash that took place late Sunday night.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:46 p.m., Sunday, August 5, 2018 at the intersection of Glasgow Avenue and Summit Bridge Road (DE 896), Newark. A 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, operated by a 26 year old Newark man was stopped at a red light in the left turn lane of Glasgow Ave., at the intersection with Summit Bridge Rd. A 2005 Honda Civic, operated by Derek R. Turner, 54, of Bear, was traveling westbound on Porter Rd., crossing over Summit Bridge Rd., to continue eastbound on Glasgow Ave. For an unknown reason the Honda drifted to the left and struck the Chevrolet head on.

Derek Turner was transported to the Christiana Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Alcohol is being considered as a contributing factor on his behalf.

The operator of the Chevrolet was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Impairment on his behalf is not being considered as a contributing factor.

Glasgow Avenue was closed for approximately 3 hours as the scene was investigated and cleared.
